Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2020 will kick start from 4th January 2020 till 22 February 2020. There will be an array of activities lining up for the young and old to enjoy the festive celebrations. Themed “Ushering in a Great Year,” the Rat is the first animal of the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals, thus, the Year of the Rat signifies a new cycle and a new beginning. We welcome you to Chinatown to immerse yourself in the festive celebrations and to experience the beauty of the Chinese culture and traditions.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2020 Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony

he Official Light Up and Opening Ceremony marks the opening of the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2020. The event continues to awe visitors with entertaining performances by both local and overseas leading performing troupes. Together with spectacular firecrackers and fireworks display, it will bring the opening ceremony to a greater height as we usher in the Year of the Rat.
Street Light-Up
- Date: 4 January – 22 February 2020
- Time: 7.00pm – 12.00mn (Daily) 7.00pm – 6.00am (Chinese New Year Eve)
- Venue: Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road and Garden Bridge
The official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony will be followed by 7 weeks of street light-up along the streets of Chinatown. The light-up will feature handmade sculptured lanterns of the Rat and other 11 Chinese Zodiac Animals, gold coins, flowers and greetings, etc. Combining traditions with modern design, visitors will be enthralled by the creativity of the contemporary street light-up design.
Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party

Usher in the Year of the Rat with live performances and a rousing countdown celebration with MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown. Be entertained by the lively performances from a medley of festive songs, skits to interactive games as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks.

Catch nightly stage performances at Kreta Ayer Square during the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations. Be entertained by lively and vibrant stage performances, Lunar New Year songs and dance performances by local and overseas artistes and performing groups.
13th International Lion Dance Competition
- Date: 11 & 12 January 2020
- Time: 6.30pm – 10.30pm
- Venue: Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre
From the rhythmic beat of the drums to the jaw-dropping stunts, there’s just something about the lion dance that evokes a sense of awe and majesty. Steeped in tradition and culture, the lion dance has gained popularity across the globe over the years and is now an internationally recognised sport.
Calling all lion dance enthusiasts, head over to the open carpark at Banda Street to witness the power and strength of the ‘King of the Lions’ over an intense competition!
This annual event which is already into its 13th year will see more than 10 reputable top lion dance troupes from Singapore and Asia Pacific, all vying for the grand prize and the honour of being recognised as ‘the best of the best’ as they pit against one another with skillful stunts and intricate manoeuvres on the meihuazhuang.

Chinatown Wishing Tree

Make your New Year wishes come true at the Chinatown Wishing Tree! Besides, you can do charity to help the needy elderly. Write wishes for yourself and your loved ones on the “Make a Wish” card and hang them on the banyan tree. Each wishing card costs $2/- and all proceeds will be donated to the Kreta Ayer Seniors ‘ Activity Centre. Through this meaningful community event, you can bring festive cheers to the less fortunate and reaching out to them with your helping hands.
Chingay 2020 @ Heartlands

The Chingay parade, the annual largest street performance and float parade in Asia, will make an appearance in Chinatown this year to bring the celebrations to a great height but also marking the end of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Join us with your family and friends for a vibrant night that include special performances by local and overseas performers and not forgetting the 10 over beautifully decorated and lighted float.
Heritage & Food Trail (Cantonese Chapter)
- Date: 5, 11, 12, 18 & 19 January 2020

Join this historical and cultural expedition that will take participants on a guided tour through Chinatown to learn more about this historical precinct and bask in the Chinese New Year festivities. Participants also got to savour authentic Cantonese cuisine at the famous and historical hawker centres in town such as the People’s Park Food Centre and Chinatown Complex Food Centre.
