June 2017 Chemical Engineering Holiday Workshop
12 June 2017: Introduction to Chemical Engineering, Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions
Students will learn about chemical engineering and the role of a chemical engineer. Students will define the physical properties of mixtures, create an endothermic & exothermic reaction and understand the difference between endothermic and exothermic reaction.
13 June 2017: Chromatography
This activity is designed to teach students about the fundamentals of chemical separation through an easy-to-understand demonstration with marker dye. Students will watch in amazement as compound colours – like green and purple – slowly separate into their individual components, and will be challenged to infer which colour matches to its appropriate chromatograph.
14 June 2017: Density
In this lesson, students will learn about liquids and how different liquids have different density. Students will apply their knowledge about density to create their own lava lamp and density column.
15 June 2017: Lift Off
Taking cues from aerospace engineering, the Lift Off Activity will focus on the chemical reactions that occur between two inert substances, water and calcium carbonate. Students will also have the chance to design their own aerodynamic body gear for a small model rocket and test their unique chemical propellant in a multi-phase process.
