Ultimate Summer Game Coding (Level I: Apprentice)

Ultimate Summer Game Coding (Level I: Apprentice)

At the USGC, students learn to code by creating computer games.

The USGC transforms students from Coding Zero to Coding Hero, from beginners to confident coders able to design, plan, develop and fix their own games.

The bootcamps are specially designed to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of coding and algorithms in a fun, engaging environment. Students will experience and appreciate the relevance of coding by first creating their own computer games, and then playing the games that they created themselves!

The USGC is a precursor to the Minecraft Modding program, should the little coders choose to grow their skills further.

Technology

The USGC uses Scratch 2.0 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Scratch is a platform and graphical-based programming language that encapsulates many fundamental codng structures.

Bootcamp Levels

There are three levels of bootcamps in the USGC. Each bootcamp totals 10 instruction hours. Students who complete both levels may advance to the Minecraft Modding program.

Level I: Apprentice Bootcamp

This bootcamp is for beginners or students with minimal or no prior experience in coding.

What students learn in the Apprentice Bootcamp:

  • Familiarization with Scratch and its interface
  • Introduction to basic coding cconcepts
  • Game story boarding, project planning and incremental programming concepts
  • Coding with motions, sounds, character controls, conditionals
  • Testing and debugging
  • Game scoring
  • Project show-and-tell and sharing session

Level II: Explorer Bootcamp

This bootcamp is for graduates of the Level I: Apprentice Bootcamp. It takes the student to the next level of programming by having them code finer algorithms in their games. In this bootcamp, students are challenged to think computationally on their own and implement their solutions with fundamental code structures. Students create more complex and even more fun games!

What students learn in the Explorer Bootcamp:

  • Using knowledge and skills from the Apprentice camp, you will plan and create more extensive games
  • Coding with time
  • More coding with motions, sounds, character controls, conditionals
  • More game scoring
  • More testing and debugging
  • Project show-and-tell and sharing session

Level III: Creator Bootcamp

This bootcamp is for graduates of the Level II: Explorer Bootcamp. In this bootcamp, the student creates large game projects. This requires the student to immerse in a mini software development cycle of planning & designing, coding, testing, debugging and enhancing. Students apply more complex algorithms and make use of many fundamental coding constructs

What students learn in the Creator Bootcamp:

  • Managing and implementing larger game projects
  • Defining and using functions
  • Designing and implementing more refined algorithms
  • Integrating all coding constructs learnt from previous bootcamps
  • Designing and planning more sophisticated user experience
  • Project show-and-tell and sharing session

Schedule

  • Level I: Apprentice Bootcamp

25 - 28 Jul (Tue – Fri), 10:00 – 12:30

  • Level II: Explorer Bootcamp

1 - 4 Aug (Tue - Fri), 10:00 – 12:30

  • Level III: Creator Bootcamp

8 - 11 Aug (Tue - Fri), 10:30 - 12:30

Students must be familiar with and comfortable operating the laptop i.e. able to switch the computer on/off and familiar with the keyboard.

All participants need a personal laptop and are encouraged to bring their own. If you do not have a personal laptop, LccL Coding Academy provides laptops at a small rental fee ($2 per hour) to be used during the bootcamp. Recommended laptop specification: Windows 7 / 8 / 10, Mac OS X or Linux. At least 4 GB RAM.

Bootcamp Life

To provide optimal learning environment, the class size is kept to a maximum of eight students. Participants enjoy elements of working in teams and learning from both the teacher and their peers. Warning: it is a bootcamp (which means it can get intensive) and a fun camp (which means it is intensely fun).
