Critical thinking skills are crucial and can benefit your children in many ways.
Every workshop will discuss specific topics with the aid of a picture book, specially curated for that session.
Workshop 1: 10th September
- Topic: Friendship
- Picture Book: “Peach & Blue,” by Sarah S. Kilbourne
- Children will discuss themes like:
- Definitions of friendship (How do we know when someone is a friend and when someone isn’t a friend? What makes you someone else’s friend?/What makes you not someone else’s friend?)
- Matters of free will (Can you choose who you are friends with?)
- Individuality (Do friends have to be similar to us? Can friendships change who we are? Is there anyone else who has exactly the same friends as you?)
Workshop 2: 24th September
- Topic: Art
- Picture Book: “ish,’’ by Peter Reynolds
- Children will discuss themes like:
- The nature of art (Why does Ramon like to draw? Does drawing or other types of art have to have an outcome? Does art have to be displayed in order to be art, or can the artist keep it private? Is a painting better art than another because it costs more?)
- Subjectivity (Why do Ramon and his brother have different opinions of what counts as ‘’art?’’ Are some opinions about art more defensible than others? Can you like a drawing even though someone else doesn’t?)
Workshop 3: 1st October
- Topic: Community and Self
- Picture Book: “The Big Orange Splot,” by Daniel Pinkwater
- Children will discuss themes like:
- The community (What makes up the community in Mr. Plumbean’s neighborhood? Is it where they live/what language they speak/what food they eat? Who makes up your own community?)
- The relationship between one’s self and the community (Was it ok for Mr. Plumbean to paint his house differently because he wanted to, even though it initially upset his neighbours? Can you always do whatever you want? Can you belong to a community even if you are different from other members in some way?)
Workshop 4: 8th October
- Topic: Knowledge
- Picture Book: “Morris the Moose,” by B. Wiseman
- Children will discuss themes like:
- The nature of knowledge (Why does Morris say that he “knows” that everyone is a moose? What evidence / reasons does he produce to support this belief? Can you think of a reason for everything you believe?)
- Knowledge and adaptability (Why isn’t Morris convinced when the other animals tell him that he is wrong? Can you think of situations in which new evidence has made people change what they think? Is it easy for people to admit when they are wrong?)
This is organised as a series of 4 workshops to ensure that children can maximise their learning opportunities around critical thinking. And for a limited time period only, parents can register their child for all 4 workshops at an early bird price of $79 if you sign up before the 8th September.
