Artist and Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies
Organised in association with Tate Britain, the Gallery’s second international exhibition explores the different ways in which the British Empire has been represented and contested through art. It critically examines art produced for the British Empire from a contemporary perspective, and features viewpoints from Southeast Asia. The exhibition also takes a close look at the relationship between colonial experience and the rise of modern art in former colonies such as Singapore, with a special focus on Sir Stamford Raffles.
Ranging from the 16th century to the present day, Artist and Empire draws upon close to 200 works from international and regional collections as well as Singapore institutions.
