A conductor, mentor and friend, Assoc Prof Ho Hwee Long, planted a seed 50 years ago in the Singapore wind band scene.
To celebrate Prof Ho’s 80th birthday, the alumni band members from National Institute of Education, National Junior College and National University of Singapore have come together to present Celebrations, a special fundraising concert to support the Ho Hwee Long Music Score Commission Fund.
To honour Prof Ho’s long serving contributions in the local wind band scene, this concert aims to raise $25,000 to commission original music scores for local bands, to expand the wind band repertoire and benefit more young Singaporeans in their music learning journey.
About the Music Score Commission Fund
Similar to the importance of availability of textbooks, reference materials and other learning resources, making more compositions available is crucial to a wholesome music education. The music score commission fund aims to commission new wind band scores which can be performed by NUS Wind Symphony and by all local schools free-of-charge, expanding the wind band repertoire and benefiting more young Singaporeans in their music learning journey.
As the administrator of the fund, NUS Centre For the Arts will:
- Connect with local and international composers;
- Encourage creativity in new composition writing;
- Provide programming platforms to debut the new works; and
- Provide commissioned scores to local schools, royalty-free.
The fund will help to:
- Expand the existing music repertoire in Singapore,
- Expose students to greater variety of music, and
- Offer wider selection of performances to the public.
*Singapore tax residents are eligible for a tax deduction that is 2.5 times the gift value for gifts made in 2019.
