Young Photographers Camp 2020

Objectifs' Young Photographers Camp returns for a second run these school holidays — with new workshops including a photowalk, holiday photo crafts and cyanotype printing!

Our experienced instructors will guide participants through these short, highly interactive sessions that not only equip kids with basic photography skills, but also allow them to experience the medium as an avenue for visual storytelling and creative self-expression and as a lens through which to examine and document their environment more closely.

No prior experience is required, and all materials required will be provided. Participants can bring their own cameras or borrow Objectifs' equipment. Each workshop is restricted to just five participants per the current Covid-19 health and safety measures, so sign up now!

  • Workshop A: Storytelling with Your Toys / Mon 14 Dec, 10am to 12pm / $70

This workshop will introduce participants to visual stoytelling. They will learn the fundamentals of constructing a compelling narrative, developing characters, planning their story using a storyboard, and how to compose interesting photographs. Participants are encouraged to bring along their favourite toys. The workshop will end with a sharing session where each member of the group will present their photo stories to their new friends!

  • Workshop B: Light Painting / Mon 14 Dec, 1.30pm to 3.30pm / $50

This workshop introduces participants to long exposure photography. They will learn about the role of light in photography, how to set up a camera on a tripod, and examine how light is captured when we use different shutter speeds on a camera. Then, it's time to use their imagination to 'paint' what they'd like, and capture the magical results on camera!

  • Workshop C: Pinhole Photography / Tues 15 Dec, 10am to 1pm / $90

In the days before digital cameras, there were pinhole cameras. Participants will learn to make their very own pinhole camera using everyday materials and will observe first-hand how photographs are developed using special chemicals, in a darkroom.

  • Workshop D: Make a Photo Zine! / Tues 15 Dec, 2.30pm to 5.30pm / $90

Participants will be introduced to zines and, through examples, learn how they can be avenues for self-expression, documentation and to share information, experiences and resources. They will pick up basic camera handling techniques and learn how to compose interesting photographs, and will embark on a guided shoot in the neighbourhood where they'll capture whatever strikes them. They will get their photos printed and work on their very own photo zines.

  • Workshop E: Photowalk: Exploring Waterloo Street / Wed 16 Dec, 10am to 12pm / $50

Waterloo Street is home to colourful buildings, various religions' sites, arts centres, interesting old trades and much more. In this guided photowalk, participants will explore the area on foot with cameras and learn more about its history and flavour. They will strive to complete a 'photo bingo' card of shooting challenges that will encourage them to look closer at their surroundings and frame creative compositions!

  • Workshop F: Photo Crafts / Wed 16 Dec, 1.30pm to 4.30pm / $90

Participants are invited to celebrate the end of year festive season with this crafty workshop. They will pick up basic camera handling techniques and learn how to compose interesting photographs, and will embark on a guided shoot in the neighbourhood where they'll capture whatever strikes them. Back at Objectifs, they'll get their photos printed and decorate a photo frame and make holiday cards they can bring home with them to gift to loved ones. They are also welcome to bring their own photos of family, friends and their favourite places or objects to use for these activities.

  • Workshop G: Fun in the Sun! Cyanotype Printing / Thu 17 Dec, 2.30pm to 5.30pm / $90

Cyanotypes are one of the oldest forms of printmaking, discovered in the 1840s. They have been used by scientists and architects for years to create "blueprints". In this workshop, participants will work with found materials from nature like leaves and flowers and explore how the sun plays a crucial role in cyanotype printing. They will take home their very own artwork in a distinctive cyan blue!
