School’s out! Join us for a series of fun science experiments that requires your kids to be hands-on this school holidays!
Kidz Science Workshops
These workshops impart key concepts learnt in schools in an unorthodox, yet engaging manner, while also inculcating invaluable principles of teamwork and creativity.
Fun Science: Heat Transfer (Ice & Fire)
Participants explore heat transfer and energy efficiency using the context of energy efficient houses. They will gain a solid understanding of the 3 types of heat transfer: Radiation, Convection and Conduction, which are explained in detail and related to the real world.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2018
- Time:10am - 12pm
Fun Science: Polymers
Participants explore the chemical identities of polymeric materials which are frequently used in their everyday lives. They will learn how chemical composition affects the physical properties of the materials that they encounter and use frequently, as well as how cross-linking affects the properties of polymeric materials.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2018
- Time: 12.30pm - 2.30pm
Fun Science: Chemical Reactions
Participants learn and understand that for a chemical reaction, you will need 2 or more reactants and the result is a product. Chemical Reaction products can be a gas, color, temperature change or another chemical substance. They will observe, review and understand how reactants work together to form a product.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2018
- Time: 10am - 12pm
Fun Science: Mealworms
Participants will learn about the different parts of the mealworm and how to create a suitable environment in order to care for the worms in different stages of the lifecycle.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2018
- Time: 12.30pm - 2.30pm
Fun Science: Forensics
Forensic analysis often involves the examination of hand-written materials. When analysing a sample of handwriting, forensic scientists look for particular characteristics that can be used to distinguish the writer. Even when someone attempts to disguise their handwriting, unique characteristics in their punctuation or grammar can still be identified. Other clues lie in the writing instruments (type of pen/pencil) and the paper that is written on.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2018
- Time: 10am - 12pm
Fun Science: Bridge
Participants learn about the forces acting on bridges and structures. The kids will understand that bridges require stability to support a load. The kids will learn about how and why some structures and shapes are stronger than others. They learn to understand the effect of bad engineering, torsion, sagging, collapse and others.
- Venue:SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2018
- Time: 12.30pm - 2.30pm
Fun Science: Gravity
Participants explore the physics exploited by engineers in designing today's roller coasters, including potential and kinetic energy, friction and gravity. Firstly, they learn that all true roller coasters are completely driven by the force of gravity and that the conversion between potential and kinetic energy is essential to all roller coasters. Secondly, they consider the role of friction in slowing down cars in roller coasters. Finally, they examine the acceleration of roller coaster cars as they travel around the track. During the associated activity, students design, build and analyze model roller coasters they make using foam tubing and marbles (as the cars).
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2018
- Time: 10am - 12pm
Fun Science: Ecosystem
Participants with their partners will get to make a terrarium to take home. Participants learn more about the ecosystem, how they observe examples of terrariums and gain inspiration for their personal project. They build their own terrariums and strengthen their responsibilities as they will also learn how to take care and maintain their terrariums creations which they get to bring back.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2018
- Time: 12.30pm - 2.30pm
Food Science: Reversible Food
During this workshop, participants will be doing a series of hands-on food science experiments involving foods such as jelly, popcorn, and chocolate. Through this, they would understand what reversible and non-reversible science is. It will be an action-packed workshop with one after another activity!
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2018
- Time: 10am - 11.30am
Food Science: Food DNA
Participants will have to put on their thinking hats as we do the various experiments. They will have to experiment and test which type of food is a conductor and which is not using the Makey-Makey kit. Through this unique way of food testing, explorers will get to use different food as a game controller or even as piano keyboards! Following which, they will be extracting the DNA from a the strawberry and through that understand what is a DNA is. Lastly, they will be experimenting with yeast and understand why yeast is an important organism in our daily life.
- Venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh, Function Room, Level 3
- Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2018
- Time: 10am - 11.30am
Suitable for children aged 5 to 12 years old. Registration will be closed 3 days before the respective dates of the workshops.
