February 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, declared by the United Nations (UN). This is the second year that Science Centre Singapore runs DiscovHER.

Be part of a global effort to support and promote women and girls in their participation in STEM.

Embark on an educational trail at various galleries to discover more about females who have made their mark in Science.

DiscovHER Trail

This trail will allow visitors to learn more about women in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field based on excerpts of articles written by them. Answer all questions in the trail booklet correctly to redeem a token.

Venue: Hall A

Redemption of tokens will be at Interaction Corner @ The Mind's Eye exhibition from 10.30am - 12.30pm & 1.30pm - 5.30pm.

A Morning with Dr Christine Cheung

Dr Christine Cheung, an established female scientist in Singapore, will share her inspirations of becoming a scientist and the challenges that she faced.

Melitta Bentz

A German female inventor/entrepreneur who invented the first coffee filters in 1908.

Activity: Filtered and brewed coffee is a staple in the lives of many people today. Discover how Melitta Bentz and her love for coffee led to the invention of the coffee filter, giving the world a taste of filtered coffee for the first time.

Venue: Interaction Corner @ The Mind's Eye exhibition

Caroline Herschel

The world’s first professional woman astronomer and the first female to discover a comet, discovering a total of eight in her lifetime, six of which bear her name.

Activity: Learn about the anatomy of a comet and make your very own comet on a stick.

Venue: Hall B

Female Engineers

Justyna Zander: She holds six patents and is a product manager for the technology behind self-driving cars.
Yael Garten: Director of Siri Analytics, Apple
Sophia Valestegui: General Manager of Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence Unit

Activity: These female engineers have made significant contributions to Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), in particular, Siri, Cortana and self-driving cars. Discover more about these A.I. innovations through a presentation video and also activities such as Akinator, Tic Tac Toe challenge, Machine Learning Card games
