Coding Music With Sonic Pi

Coding Music With Sonic Pi

Online workshop - Coding Music with Sonic Pi, led by Dr. Chow Jun Yan from the National University of Singapore.

This workshop introduces programming and computer music. In this workshop, the participants get to create their own songs through coding with Sonic Pi, which is based on the popular Ruby programming language. This workshop is beginner-friendly and requires no prior programming experience. Participants without a musical background are also welcome to attend.

In this two-hour workshop, we will:

  • Create sounds by typing text into Sonic Pi
  • Discover what MIDI note numbers are and how to convert them into music notes
  • Change the sound by using different synths
  • Produce multiple melody lines
  • Add effects (such as reverb) and use parameters (such as amplitude, envelope, panning, etc.) to change the sound quality of the notes
