Writing about Indonesia with Okky Madasari & Shivaji Das

 

Despite being one of the most important nations of the world, there is limited literature about Indonesia that is available to outsiders to understand this highly diverse yet dynamic region. As the Indonesian society goes through a phase of growing tension between conservative and liberal forces, rising economic inequality, and increasing alienation among the youth, this panel asks two writers — Indonesian and foreign — who have written extensively about Indonesia about their perspective on the country’s changing landscape.

About the panelists:

  • Okky Madasari, visiting fellow at National University of Singapore, is an Indonesian award winning novelist known for her exquisite portrayals of the social and political conditions in contemporary Indonesia. Her works focus on one overarching theme: resistance against injustice and the struggle for freedom and humanity.
  • Shivaji Das is a Singaporean author of three books of narrative non-fiction on travel, anthropology and arts. He has written extensively on Indonesia His work has been featured in newspapers and magazines such as the Jakarta Post, Panajournal Indonesia, TIME, the Economist. Shivaji is also the founder of the acclaimed Migrant & Refugee poetry contests in Malaysia and Singapore.

About the moderator:

  • Windu Lestari was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and is currently working in Singapore as domestic helper. Windu writes short stories, novelettes, and poems and has also acted in plays. She was one of the featured artists at the Singapore Writers Festival in 2017.
