Venue: BooksActually, (9 Yong Siak Street, Singapore 168645)
About the book:
Circumstance investigates who knows what, when about a variety of secrets, and who lies about what they know, to whom, and why. It explores what counts as a sensible belief, what counts as knowledge, and what counts as an explanation in the different societies of the colonial British, and the colonised Malays, and thus also how societies shape their members' understanding of what counts as knowledge.
These questions are addressed through a study of a relationship triangle involving a British bride, who has just arrived in Malaya on the arm of her new husband, and the Malay woman who was previously his mistress. The novel was loosely inspired by The Force of Circumstance, a short story by William Somerset Maugham.
