Three renowned disciples of legendary musician Ravi Shankar—Grammy award-winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Mohan veena; slide guitar), Pandit Daya Shankar (shehnai, an instrument similar to an oboe) and Pandit Tarun Batthacharya (santoor; a dulcimer-like instrument)—present an intimate evening of somber, meditative and devotional ragasassociated with the night.
Best known for his Grammy award-winning album A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is the master and creator of the Mohan veena. Bhatt comes from a long line of musicians whose heritage can be traced back to prominent figure and 15th century Mughal court musician Tansen, and his guru, the Hindu mystic Swami Haridas.
Daya Shankar, a famous shehnai player who travels wide to give performances, also hails from a family of musicians who are masters of the Banaras gharana. He was a disciple of shehnai maestro Pandit Anant Lal and Ravi Shankar.
Master of the santoor, Tarun Bhattacharya is a pioneering and revolutionary musician who has changed the face of Indian classical music. He is regarded as a global music ambassador for India, and has performed at prestigious halls all over the world. He was trained by his father Pandit Rabi Bhattacharya, Pandit Dulal Roy and Ravi Shankar. His list of admirers include Prince Charles, George Harrison, Paolo Solaris and more.
