Following the critically acclaimed 2017 Homage concert, Cultural Medallion recipient Tsung Yeh returns to lead the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra in Yellow River Cantata, now also in his newly appointed role as the orchestra’s artistic advisor.
A celebration of music that will undoubtedly stir the soul in its nationalistic fervour—the centrepiece of the programme will be the Yellow River Cantata by Chinese composer Xian Xinghai. An epic work scored for a large orchestra with additional Chinese instruments, a narrator, soloists and a choir, this modern choral masterpiece was inspired by a patriotic poem by Guang Weiran and conceived as an ode to the great river that is the wellspring of Chinese civilisation.
Just like the Yellow River Cantata, both Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 by George Enescu, which contains elements of gypsy music and vivid Romanian rhythms, and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, a festival overture celebrating and commemorating the successful Russian defence against the advancing French army, displays their love and pride for their country. To round off the concert, the orchestra presents a piece by Singapore composer and Cultural Medallion recipient Phoon Yew Tien.
