Free talk: The Christmas Island Red Crab Annual Breeding Migration - why, when, where and how
No feature of Christmas Island's unique fauna attracts more public attention than the spectacular annual breeding migration of the island's tens of millions of Red crabs (Gecarcoidea natalis).
The spectacular mass movement of millions of densely moblised crabs at the same time all over the island, travelling from the forest to the shore to mate and deposit their eggs in the sea, is one of the most amazing animal migrations that occur on Earth.
The management of the red crab migration by authorities and the island community will also be covered, including design, development and installation of some very unique infrastructure to protect the migrating crabs. The annual road kill of robber crabs will also be touched up.
