Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, is a protected mountain range and home to indigenous communities of more than 30,000 people across 4 tribes.
The mountain peaks are over 5,000 m high, rising from the shores of the Caribbean and clad in tropical forests, open savannah and cloud forest. Come and witness the immense respect the community elders have for the land and earth through the eyes of those who protect it.
To the people who call it home, the Sierra Nevada is the heart of the world. The Mamos (elders in the community who encompass the roles of priest, teacher and doctor) in the community take on the responsibility of maintaining the balance of the universe by making offerings at sacred sites to give back to earth what has been taken out of it. Witness how the people of the Sierra Nevada live in harmony with their environment and how the Mamos play a quintessential role in their daily lives.
This exhibition is presented by the Embassy of Colombia in Singapore, featuring the works of Photographer Coque Gamboa.
The People’s Gallery consists of several photo spaces located in areas at the 3 major gates of the Botanic Gardens – Botany Centre @ Tanglin Gate, Visitor Centre @ Nassim Gate & Bukit Timah Gate.
