Arts in Your Neighbourhood March 2018



Welcome to a new season of Arts in Your Neighborhood!

 

Arts in Your Neighbourhood is back this March with nearly 50 arts activities happening in 16 locations across the island. With so many activities in this season, there is surely something suitable for everyone!

The Arts in Your Neighbourhood programme, an initiative by the National Arts Council, brings enriching arts experiences right to your doorstep! Enjoy interactive arts programmes by established artists and arts groups held at various spaces across the island.

Fun and enriching arts experiences for the whole family await you this March, as Arts in Your Neighbourhood returns for its 10th edition! This season, they explore the town of Ang Mo Kio, once home to rubber plantations, rambutan trees, and a variety of bridges (which possibly gave it its name). Take a trip down memory lane and explore Ang Mo Kio's kampung days with public art installations, or embark on a special photographic trail facilitated by professional photographers to see Ang Mo Kio through different lenses.

Stop and Smell the Ang Mo Dan!

Consisting of mural paintings and installations constructed with metal pipes, mirrors, and even bicycles, the fun and interactive art installations of Stop and Smell the Ang Mo Dan invite audiences to slow down and reminisce on the history and memories of Ang Mo Kio, while re-imagining everyday spaces around the neighbourhood through four new public artworks.

The artists presenting the works are Angie Seah, Chen Sai Hua Kuan, Lai Wei Min and Yip Yew Chong.

A commission by the National Arts Council's Public Art Trust.

The Birdman and his Chimera Orchestra

Making their debut in Singapore, catch The Birdman and his Chimera Orchestra, a roving and interactive street performance by French arts group Demain On Change Tout. Bringing together the worlds of poetry and fantasy inspired by the old fairground carnivals, audiences will embark on an adventure in this theatrical show with a three-and-a-half metre tall puppet – Birdman, and his musicians, The Chimera Orchestra.

Nadine & The Enchanting Pots

Nadine & the Enchanting Pots is a delightful tale told with music and imagination! Meet fantastic characters and discover how Nadine uses three magical, melodious pots to bring harmony to her village. This is a lively and heart-warming story about friendship that sets the imagination alight with puppetry, music, colourful costumes and larger-than-life props in a kampung setting, where a community that makes music together, stays together.

Stick around after the performance for photos with the cast and join in the fun at the specially designed activity areas. Stop by at Nadine's kampung house for arts and craft, or explore Bandit the Tiger's Lalang Maze!

Nomadic Art Caravan

  • Schedule: 24 & 25 March 2018, 5pm – 10pm

Spot the Nomadic Art Caravan as it pops up in the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood! Watch how they take over one of Ang Mo Kio’s open carparks and transform the space into a mini art carnival ground, celebrating music, dance and theatre.

Look out for performances, interactive art installations, engaging workshops, and larger-than-life heritage game sets. Art aside, look forward to a free sampling of salted egg-flavoured local goodies in this carnival.

Got to Move Pop-Up: Piano Playground

Join in the fun on life-size piano play mats and create sweet tunes by hopping, skipping, jumping and galloping on the piano keys! Also catch exhilarating contemporary dance performances by dancers from TRDO!

The Dicapella Magic Flute: Wonders of Ang Mo Kio

Enjoy musical performances inspired by the wonders of Ang Mo Kio, led by Dicapella’s Principal Conductor, Heng Xiangle, and presented by a fusion ensemble featuring The Philharmonic Winds, Bhaskar’s Arts Academy and Dicapella Dizi Ensemble. Armed with a magic flute and activity book, participants will complete various musical tasks at the carnival booths, and gather clues that will help uncover the possible meaning behind the name Ang Mo Kio.
