Impart Collectors' Show: Fabulous Monsters

The IMPART Collectors’ Show 2019 spotlights visually arresting works of Asian contemporary art from Singapore-based collections

Opening Reception: 16 January 2019, 7.30 pm
Exhibition Period: 17 January – 2 February 2019 (10 am to 7 pm daily)
Venue: Level 4, ArtScience Museum
The IMPART Collectors’ Show 2019 spotlights visually arresting works of Asian contemporary art from Singapore-based collections. The exhibition, Fabulous Monsters, demonstrates the depth of engagement and risk-taking among private collectors today.
In times of conflict and uncertainty, one of the responses of contemporary artists has been a retreat from the horrors of our social-political realities into an inner world of dreams. Yet this trajectory is no simple escape from life. The dream-like worlds created by contemporary artists are ways in which the rich repertoire of visual iconography in Asia are cleverly deployed to critique the current social-political fractures in oblique and suggestive ways beyond polemical positions.
Organised by Art Outreach Singapore with the curatorial advisor and jury chair of the Impart Awards, Tan Boon Hui, Vice President of Global Arts & Cultural Programs and Director of Asia Society Museum.
The following free public programmes will be held in conjunction with the exhibition:

Impart Symposium

"Branding in Southeast Asian Art: Artists, Collectors, Spaces" moderated by Sara Mao, Director for Christie's Education in Asia.
With an ever-expanding market and changing art market, South East Asian Art is one of the fastest growing categories in global exhibitions, galleries and biennales. This panel discussion will investigate the growth of Southeast Asian artists, their influences and influencers, and how commercial and art fair practices have help to create the brand of "southeast Asian art".

Speakers include Catherine David, director at Musée National d’Art Moderne. Centre Georges Pompidou, Johnson Chang, founder of Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong and co-founder of the Asia Art Archive (AAA), as well as world-renowned artists, Zhong Biao and Jin Meyerson.

  • 26 Jan 2019, 11.30 am:

"Private collecting, public legacies? A Panel Discussion" moderated by Tan Boon Hui (Vice President of Global Arts & Cultural Programs and Director of Asia Society Museum). The panel is consisting of Jim Amberson, Hady Ang and Mark Goh of the MaGMA Collection

The unprecedented expansion of the art market and private collecting in recent years has been accompanied by an increasing interest on the part of private collectors in encouraging greater public engagement with art through their collections. What motivates collectors to exhibit their collections? How does the exhibiting of private collections shape public views of contemporary art? What is the potential impact of private collecting on today's art museums? How can private collecting support the developing art scenes of Southeast Asia over the long term, and will it follow the trajectory of the American museums, which have been built from the legacies of private collectors.
