Robotics: Building Blocks of a Creator (Age 6-8)

Robotics: Building Blocks of a Creator (Age 6-8)

This course is designed for young children to learn the fundamentals of robotics and programming.

Utilizing the most advanced educational tools developed in the Silicon Valley, including Dash & Dot, Beebot, and Sphero, students will come to understand technology as a tool to solve problems and create useful things.

Students practice giving commands to the robots in class by working on puzzles and projects. Basic concepts in mathematics and programming, such as time, speed and conditionals, will also be taught during class. Through the intuitive interface of their iPads, they are introduced to block programming to control the robots, as well as create small animations and games on their screen. By the end of the course, our students would have moved beyond playing with their devices, and begin to see them as tools for a creative purpose.

Introduction to robotics with Beebot

  • Understanding programming as giving a list of commands
  • Familiarizing the students with simple commands to work on robots
  • Hands-on: Simple games and challenges on BeeBot

Programming and fun with Dash

  • Understanding key mathematics and science concepts (time, speed, intensity)
  • Understanding concepts in programming (conditionals, repeat)
  • Familiarizing the students with the interface of Blockly
  • Understanding the use of computer and robots in real world
  • Hands-on: Simple robotic programming activities using Dash

Exploration with Sphero

  • Reinforce key programming and mathematical concepts through a new interface
  • Explore additional computer science concepts (parameters, RGB color model)
  • Hands-on: Completing programming challenges with Sphero
