Singapore Heritage Festival returns to the National Museum!
From a "live" mural painting session to a workshop on Singapore’s hawker heritage, look forward to a variety of programmes happening over three weekends at the museum.

In conjunction with the Singapore Heritage Festival 2017, the National Museum of Singapore presents the artworks of Yip Yew Chong, whose life-sized murals seek to express the romance of “places and moments… that blend sights, sounds, smell and tastes”. Yip’s murals have captured the imagination of those who have travelled to heritage neighbourhoods such as Kampong Glam and Tiong Bahru in search of them.
Savour these moments of our tangible and intangible heritage, such as barbers in back lanes and fortune tellers, traditional kopi-making and road-side communal satay-eating, as they come alive through animation, soundscape and projection in Gallery10, the museum’s new digital experimental space.

Catch mural artist Yip Yew Chong in action at this live painting session at the National Museum of Singapore! Visitors can interact with the artist as he creates a painting based on the museum’s rich 130 years of history, drawing inspiration from some of its iconic scenes and features over the years.

Over the three weekends of the Singapore Heritage Festival, A Lighter Side of History will shine the spotlight on individual-led and ground-up initiatives that document Singapore’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Several life-sized murals, which express the romance of “places and moments… that blend sights, sounds, smell and tastes”, have captured the imagination of those who have travelled to heritage neighbourhoods such as Kampong Glam and Tiong Bahru.
Unknown to many, these were designed and painted by Yip Yew Chong, an accountant who completed his first public mural in August 2015.
Hear from Yew Chong as he discusses his hopes of documenting Singapore’s history and heritage through his murals, the behind-the-scenes of creating these works, and his interesting encounters with people in the process.
Visitors can also enjoy a selection of Yew Chong’s artworks, which are presented as a multimedia installation in Gallery10 at the National Museum of Singapore, from 28 April to 31 July 2017.

From Kampong and Cemetery to a Housing Estate: Tracing Bishan’s Transformation Through the Years

Most of the Bishan housing estate sits on what used to be Peck San Theng, a Cantonese cemetery, and Kampong San Teng, a village.
Join Lee Kok Leong – a passionate museum volunteer, and curator of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital Heritage Gallery and Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng Heritage Centre – as he shares the story of Bishan’s transformation over the years, beginning with the history of the cemetery, the communities which resided in the village and what the tombstones reveal about the culture, traditions and professions of these communities.
This talk will be conducted in Mandarin.

"Food is about sharing happiness" – local chef Willin Low, founder of Wild Rocket
Food also inspires conversations between friends and generations. Spend your afternoon with Chef Willin, who will share the inspirations behind his dishes, and how he seeks to save Singapore's hawker heritage through the dishes he lovingly creates. Participants can also look forward to savouring some of Chef Willin's dishes.

Growing Up in Keong Saik by Charmaine Leung

Charmaine Leung, the author of an upcoming publication, 17A Keong Saik Road, shares her experiences growing up in a shophouse on Keong Saik Road in the 1970s when it was a red-light district. Featuring stories about the area and its people, 17A Keong Saik Road interweaves past and present narratives with the author’s personal journey of hope and reconciliation.

Block printing, which was invented to record history, employs similar techniques used in linocut, where a design is carved into a linoleum surface to create a negative mould.
Join us at the National Museum of Singapore for a linocut carving and printing activity by MATTER Prints, featuring specially customised designs based on the museum’s unique architectural elements. Ready-made stencils are also available for younger audiences. Keep a look out for these architectural features as you explore the museum!

Within the “Singapura” section of the National Museum’s Singapore History Gallery lies the Singapore Stone, one of our national treasures. Join Rosemarie Somaiah or Aunty Rose in this exciting storytelling session of Singapore’s legends for families and children!
