Joyful Morning with the Y String Quartet (cancelled)

For this special concert, the Y String Quartet will bring some of their usual brand of swinging and top-tapping arrangements of jazz and pop standards.

They will also throw in some Armenian folk melodies to celebrate and enhance the festive vibes; perhaps their joyous music might inspire you to get up and dance the Tamzara? There’s always the risk with the Y’s.

This is not your ordinary string quartet. How? You ask. Why Y? You ask. Beneath their seemingly straight-laced shell/facade, lie many surprises. That's Y.

This group of string players, all practitioners of the Freedom String Method is bringing a refreshing new sound into town. Led by Fiddler For Peace, Kailin Yong and Berklee alumni, Felix Phang, they are taking the tried-and-true classical string quartet model and stretching it beyond its stylistic and sonic possibilities/comfort zone.
Sounds a little like “A Little Nightmare Music”? Not to worry. These cats can groove. Really.

The Y String Quartet is:

  • Kailin Yong, violin/viola
  • Felix Phang, violin
  • Kim Eun Hyung, violin
  • Tan Wen-Bin, cello
