Erudite Stories (Show and Craft Session)

Be enthralled and inspired by Storyteller Swee Yean as she transports the younger generation to a world of folktales from Asia. The folktales aim to inspire children to adopt the right moral values. These include being brave and independent when looking for solutions during difficult times, and to be kind and caring towards others. They are also encouraged to express their inner creativity by designing their own paper magic fold and a story wheel.

The interactive show and craft session will include:

  • Participation in story telling of 2-3 folktales from Asia
  • Creation of own paper magic fold by weaving, drawing and colouring
  • Creation of story wheel that enables the children to retell the folktales they have heard.

Chinese Orchestra by Nanyang Philharmonic

Brought together by a burning passion for music, the Nanyang Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra (NYPhilCO) was established in July 2013 with 65 founding musicians. Many of these young musicians played vital roles and made remarkable achievements during their school days, participating in numerous international competitions and music festivals. Since 2019, the orchestra resides at Cairnhill Community Club where they continued to exude vibrancy to and share their love of music with the community.

This Chinese new year, the team will be bringing melodious festive-related tunes to the SAFRA Toa Payoh family.

Remember to secure your spots early on our cozy lawn and catch the exclusive performance!

Chinese Calligraphy Giveaway

Web of Deceit Act by Paper Monkey

Web of Deceit is a fascinating tale from Journey to the West, where the monk Master Tang San Zang, Sun Wu Kong the Monkey King, and Piggy go on an exhilarating adventure.

On their journey, the Monkey Kong, Master Tang and his fellow disciples run into the crafty Spider Demon. Spinning her web, the Spider Demon traps Master Tang and Piggy! Will Sun Wu Kong be able to come up with an ingenious plan to save his Master and Piggy?

In this fun and interactive show, children learn about the virtues of determination and loyalty while getting to know the art of traditional Teochew Metal Rod Puppets. Together with music and theatrical elements, this is a show that both kids and adults will not want to miss.

IslandS Tales by Ground Z-0

A multilingual street-wayang style, highly interactive storytelling of the not-so-popular legends or myths of Singapore. Not the usual Sir Stamford Raffles! Besides that, how much more do we know about our island? Or rather, IslandS? Presented in a retro game show manner, 3 actors from Ground Z-0 will re-enact different versions of a particular story and will invite the audience to vote or interact.

Many of these stories depict friendships, loyalty and love – within and between the migrant Chinese & the indigenous Malay. It will be an interesting contrast of how we (each race) see our counterparts now.

BOUND by Raw Moves

As we celebrate Chinese New Year 2020, let’s take time to remember Singapore’s past culture with a game of “Zero Point”. BOUND is an interactive dance performance inspired by “Zero Point”, a lost “kampong” game of the past.

Bouncing off the spirit of innovation and experimentation, BOUND uses rubber bands to explore the theme of boundaries, how they can restrict, confine and yet also define the body and space.

Come with your family and friends to be creatively inspired and join us in a game of “Zero Point”.
