The Tots' Classroom is a local boutique enrichment centre that uses a programme written by an Australian Professor
This focuses on using play-based learning to maximise children's potential to complete and surpass early childhood growth milestones in physical and cognitive development. Because of this focus, The Tots' Classroom has chosen to work exclusively with children between one and six years old.
Children find the program attractive because The Tots' Classroom uses play- and activity-based teaching. They get to get their hands dirty. While students see the activities as fun-play, each lesson is structured in such a way that students will intuitively grasp the fundamental skills that are needed to speed-up their development through a growth stage (e.g., they learn gross and fine motor skills faster, they grasp abstract concepts earlier in life).
The Professor believes that by accelerating the child's learning through these stages, children accomplish more and complete each stage to the fullest. Problems arise later in life when children do not grasp many of the fundamental skills that need to be achieved in each growth stage (e.g., abstract thinking). As specific skills are developed at each stage, this is also the time when a child is most open and absorbs anything to do with that skill at the greatest pace. Once they have gone past that stage, the opportunity is missed. For example, when children are receptive to language development (around 3-5 years old), it is very easy for them to learn multiple languages. Contrast with children who are 10 years old, they find it difficult to master second languages because the brain's language centre is now closed to new inputs.
By going through the entire program, children are much more prepared for formal schooling.
They go to school able to read, write, do arithmetic, have great social skills and can do bench-work. They can also solve problems and raise cogent arguments and questions (they can think).
The Tots' Classroom students feel like they come to play and not to class. This is important as it nurtures their love for learning. Through this love, The Tots' Classroom seeks to light their curiosity about the world around them - for this is the spark that leads to lifelong learning.
