Music has always been one of humanity’s most profound ways of forging connection.
Taking its title from Daniel Elder’s The Heart’s Reflection, this concert explores how composers across centuries have grappled with enduring themes such as love, faith, grief, hope, and freedom.
Under the baton of Kari Turunen (Finland/Canada), the SYC Ensemble Singers will bring Renaissance polyphony, Romantic lyricism, and contemporary choral music into conversation with one another. Works by Palestrina and Wilbye sit alongside music by Kostiainen, Runestad, and Hawley, revealing how deeply human emotions continue to resonate across time and cultures. The programme will also feature a newly commissioned work by Alex Freeman (USA/Finland), bringing this musical dialogue firmly into the present.
By traversing these perspectives, we continue our search for connection across histories, traditions, and voices.
