Discover the joy of movement and fall in love with dance at da:ns festival’s Footwork workshops.

 

Conducted by professional instructors, these basic workshops are designed for adults and youths with little or no experience in dance.

There’s no better way to fall in love with dance than to try dancing yourself. Footwork gives you the opportunity to learn popular dances from the experts and pick up some moves in the months leading up to the da:ns festival.

  • Lyrical Hip Hop 3 Aug, Sat, 4pm

Lyrical Hip Hop is a fluid and more interpretive version of new style Hip Hop. The name lyrical comes from the word "lyrics" because dancers use the lyrics of a song or instrumental music to do certain movements or show expression. The goal of a lyrical dancer is to use gesture, facial expression, and controlled movements to execute their movements and emotions. 

Please come in comfortable wear and proper covered shoes.

  • Lindy Hop 3 Aug, Sat, 6pm

Lindy Hop is a happy dance that will definitely put a smile on your face, as you learn how to groove to the hip hop of the Swing Era. You will learn the basics of this jazz partner dance, along with connection techniques that will get you to communicate with your partner without words!

  • Burlesque (Ladies Only) 3 Aug, Sat, 8pm

Feminine, sexy and seductive. Express your unique personality in this workshop through basic moves and techniques from dances ranging from Broadway Jazz to contemporary dance. Learn how to do body isolations and explore your feminine nature through simple choreography. 

Please come in comfortable wear and heels.

Hip Hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to Hip Hop music. These classes are usually conducted to upbeat music and are not limited to just the latest Hip Hop hits but also music from various genres. Expect an energetic class that not only teaches you basic Hip Hop movements and techniques, but also instils rhythm and precision in your muscle memory.

  • Viennese Waltz (Date Night)** 4 Aug, Sun, 6pm

Make it a fun night to remember and learn a new couple dance with your date! A relative of the slow Waltz but with a much faster tempo, the Viennese Waltz is danced to a rapid 1-2-3 beat, and is characterised by constant rotation while maintaining a smoothness and poise all the while.

*This is a partner dance workshop.

Swing dancing consists of many different rhythms, including the East Coast Swing pattern as well as the Charleston, both of which will be introduced at this workshop. Learn how to communicate with your partner and change these rhythms without words and groove to the infectious tunes from the Big Band Era!

Develop a sense of classical style and elegance through Ballet. Ballet is a fantastic foundation for all dances- it improves posture, balance, and a dancer’s overall body strength. This workshop will consist of basic Barre work, centre work, across the floor work, and a short choreography.

Bollywood dance consists of various Indian and western dance forms inspired by Bollywood movies. In this workshop, learn basic moves to favourite Hindi hit songs. Save the date and celebrate dance with us!

Lyrical Jazz dance refers to the unique style of Jazz dance that expresses emotional sentiment using the balletic line [not ballet steps] as a counterbalance to the percussive features of conventional Jazz dance. Its rhythmic movement uses the entire body, extends the body line and avoids sharp, angular movements to interpret the essence of the music.

  • Street Dance 25 Aug, Sun, 4pm

This workshop will introduce a range of basic street dance steps from the 1920s all the way to the present day, and learn about how they connect with each other. By the end of the workshop, you get to put together a simple choreography where you will have the choice of choosing your steps!

  • Afro-Cuban Rumba 25 Aug, Sun, 6pm

Afro-Cuban Rumba is an energetic dance that is closely linked to the Salsa dance community due to the similar origins of both dances. In Cuba, Rumba is a generic term encompassing a variety of musical rhythms and its associated dances. Afro-Cuban Rumba dance developed in rural Cuba, and is still danced in Havana, Mantanzas and other Cuban cities, although now it is infused with Jazz and Hip Hop. Learn the basic steps, technique, body movement, and the footwork of Afro-Cuban Rumba dance in this workshop.

  • Voguing (NEW!) 31 Aug, Sat, 4pm; 28 Sep, Sat, 4pm

Voguing, a highly stylised form of modern house dance which originated in the late 1980s that evolved out from the Harlem Ballroom scene in the 1960s. The dance style is inspired by the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and also model-like poses integrated with angular, linear and arm, leg and body movements. It gained more mainstream attention when its style was exposed in Madonna's Vogue and the famous documentary, Paris is Burning, showcasing different categories, cultures and walks of life in the Ballroom Scene.

  • Breakdancing (NEW!) 31 Aug, Sat, 6pm

Bboy or Breaking, but commonly referred to by the masses as breakdancing, is a street dance style that originated from The Bronx, New York in the early 1970s and has grown to a worldwide community in present day. Breakdancing encompasses dynamic movements through the use of one’s body and is done to music known as "Breaks" or the loop of a certain segment of a song. 

The workshop will consist of the different areas of Breaking such as Toprock (upright form of dancing in rhythmic steps), Drops (Going from upright to Footwork position, also known as downrock), Footwork (Floor Work movements comprising of both hands and legs) and Freezes (Stationary poses using your hands). 

Participants can look forward to gaining an insight and understanding the different aspects of Breakdancing as well as learning the basic moves of the dance.

Make it a fun night to remember with your date! This class will teach dancers about weight sharing, lifting, and duet choreography. So much storytelling can be told with two dancers. The pair will work and learn to trust each other to achieve a harmony of coordinated movements.

Electro Swing is dance music that mixes electronic beats to Jazz rhythms and riffs, and the dance that goes with the music has its roots in Charleston along with influences from modern street dances. Learn how to groove to these infectious tunes with some basic Charleston and Waacking moves!

Salsa is a fun and playful dance with upbeat and energising Latin music. This Beginner Salsa dance workshop is designed for ladies with no experience in Salsa dancing. Tahitian Dance is characterised by its dynamic movements danced with energetic drumbeats and joyful songs. The dance is an awesome cardio workout, strengthens core, abs, legs and glutes, and boosts your self-confidence. Most of all, it is FUN and there is no such thing as "too old" to do anything! Don’t just step to the beat, come learn more about the culture and this beautiful Polynesian dance.

Bachata is a popular form of romantic Latin music and dance that originated in the countryside and the rural neighbourhoods of the Dominican Republic. It is a favourite in the Latin dance scene that can be danced slow and sensual or fast and upbeat. Lessons are taught from open to close embrace, including unique body isolations and footwork.

Flamenco is a popular Spanish dance style recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its distinctive features include the captivating rhythms of footwork and handclaps, body carriage and arms. The dance is "earthly", highly expressive and drawn from the individual’s response to flamenco song and music, as well as from one’s life experiences. It is no wonder that flamenco has such a diverse range of styles to channel the intensity of human emotions, be it joy, anger, sadness and solitude, sensuality and love.  

Please come in comfortable wear and round-toe sturdy shoes. Ladies can wear a flare skirt.

The Pasodoble (double-step in Spanish) is a dance accompanied by a strong, lively beat and rousing music. It is influenced by the sound, drama and movement of a bullfight. Characteristic to the dance is the style of arms, posture, stance and footwork. Participants can dance individually and would not need partners at this workshop.  

Please come in comfortable wear and round-toe sturdy shoes. Ladies can wear a flare skirt.

Also known as the dance of love, Rumba is a slow dance and one of the more popular dances seen in weddings. The beautiful and slow dance movements create the romantic and sensual feel. This dance can be performed to evergreen love or pop songs.

  • Urban Contemporary 29 Sep, Sun, 2pm

This class will be a blend of urban dance styles, best for those who would like to try a dance style that is somewhere in-between Hip Hop and Contemporary. Participants will learn how to expand their movement, starting with a deep warm stretch, and transiting into short phrases across the floor, as well as learn a short choreography. Many would recognise the famous melodies of classical Spanish music as performed by orchestras worldwide. It is rare, however, to experience it with its dance "counterpart". The coming together of Spanish classical dance and music is one of the most beautiful artistic forms of Spanish heritage, for which we hope audiences in Singapore would grow to appreciate. Classical Spanish dance is refined, drawing on balletic influences as well as distinctive Spanish posture, arms, footwork, attitude and spirit.
