A musical phenomenon that has taken the US and China by storm, world-renowned pipa virtuoso Wu Man and the Huayin Shadow Puppet Band brings their signature tour to Singapore for the first time!
Recognised as a premier pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, the Grammy-nominated Wu Man has carved out a career as a soloist, educator and composer, giving the pipa a new role in traditional and contemporary music. She takes the stage with the Huayin Shadow Puppet Band, proponents of a little-known Chinese folk music genre called lao qiang, recognised in China as an Intangible Cultural Heritage and lauded as “the ancient rock and roll of the East”. Hailing from northwestern China, the band, previously known as the Zhang Family Band, has seen 11 generations of Zhang clan members among its ranks throughout the years.
Known for their boisterous and lively concerts, the band’s vocalists and musicians perform with a variety of Chinese traditional instruments including the yueqin, banhu, erhu, lute, fiddle and various percussion instruments, and feature shadow puppetry in parts of their performance.
There will be a post-performance autograph session.
