Special: Animals & Us Workshop

Special: Animals & Us Workshop

“Animals and Us” workshop is a 2-half day workshop for Children.

Animals play an important role in our lives. They provide protection and services to people and even provide us with companionship and support our emotional well-being. The human-animal bond is a valuable relationship and one which we hope our children will learn to respect and cherish.

Riding on our children’s natural interest and curiosity about animals, this workshop allows children to develop a deep appreciation of the importance of animals in our lives and encourage them to discover the wonderful animal kingdom.

Workshop is designed and voluntarily conducted by Dr.Han Zi Yang, Dr. Teo Boon Han (Friends of FSS) with support from Coach Sabrina of FSS.

In Day One of the workshop, we bring the child on a journey to discover the rich biodiversity that surrounds us, right here in Singapore. Through activities such as role-playing and games, children will explore and discover that animals have unique needs that differ amongst species and how human actions impact animals and sometimes even threaten their existence. The workshop brings across an important message that we as humans can do our part to safeguard the animals around us, whether as a responsible pet owner or by being respectful of our natural surroundings.

In Day Two of the workshop, we explore with our children, how animals, like humans have their own emotions. Just like humans, animals can feel happy, sad, fear and anger. We will learn about basic body languages of dogs and cats and practice perspective-taking, followed by a basic animal interaction segment*, where our children learn about the proper way to approach and interact with a dog/cat that they are meeting for the first time.

No live animals will be used during the workshop due to safety and animal welfare considerations. A classroom environment can be quite stressful for an animal and studies have shown that replacements, such as puppetry and animal soft toys could achieve similar learning outcomes. This course will be run by our veterinarian volunteers who are passionate in introducing the exciting world of animals to our children.
