Gardens By The Bay Celebrates National Day



Celebrate Singapore’s National Day at Gardens by the Bay from 13 Jul - 22 Aug!

 

Look forward to a visual and cultural treat - where Singaporean filmmaker Royston Tan provides creative direction to this year’s Orchid Extravaganza floral display, accompanied by an array of Peranakan-themed Programmes to showcase the rich Peranakan culture.

On 9 August, bond with your loved ones over fun activities for all ages at Supertree Grove.

Peranakan Beading Demonstration

  • Dates: 4 & 11 Aug 2018
  • Time: 12.30pm – 6.00pm

Marvel at the intricate art of Nyonya beading with Jackie Sam, a veteran with over 25 years’ experience in creating exquisite works, including a live demonstration and display of kasut manek (beaded slippers/shoes), velvet ceremonial wedding collars and other traditional Peranakan pieces.

Suara Sayang

  • Date: 4 Aug 2018
  • Time: 5.30pm – 6.00pm

Be enthralled by the sweet sounds of Suara Sayang comprising 17 singers and musicians who play the ukulele and zhong ruan (Chinese lute). With the hopes of spreading the Peranakan heritage, the group will serenade the crowd with adaptions of songs like 'Bunga Sayang', 'Gunong Payong' and many more.

Yoga In The Gardens

Start your morning this National Day with an energising Yoga session set under the iconic Supertrees. Experienced yoga instructors will guide you through this workout. Pose and stretch together, and increase your flexibility, balance and strength. Onward to a fun and healthy start!

This programme is brought to you in collaboration with True Yoga.

Registration is free and on first-come-first-served basis.

Attendees are advised to reach at least 15mins earlier before the start of the yoga session.

Please bring your own yoga mat.

Fitness & Sports

Bond with your family and friends or make new friends through ActiveSG Athletics try-outs. Throwback to some of the challenges you loved during PE with foam javelin throws, mini hurdles and more!

We Are Singapore (Dance Fitness)

Get up and dance, Singapore! Experience the evolution of Dance Fitness with the Sport5: Ahmad Yunus, Faiz Aman, Mike Yoong, Rasidah Caudal and Vikki Jonied! Boogie with aerobics from the 80s, move to the quirky ‘Great Singapore Workout’ from the 90s, groove to Latin-inspired Zumba workout and get fit and fab with fusion fitness Piloxing.

Proletariat Poetry Factory

Come and place your order for a poem and The Proletariat Poetry Factory will deliver. The process is simple - give them word of your choice and collect the product when it's ready. Curious about the mysterious ongoings of the creative process? See them hard at work at their typewriters.

Founded by artist Rachel Goh and Daren Goh, the Proletariat Poetry Factory is a performance collective that has been mass-making poems since 2006.

Games

It's playtime! Find your way to the Escape Room to exercise your brain power. Escape into virtual reality through VR games, and have a go at the ever popular Dance Dance Revolution and Xbox dance offs.

It's upsized fun when you play with family and friends! Enjoy games from giant jenga and pick up sticks, to popular arcade games like foosball and air hockey, and old school games like hopscotch, zero point and more. Attempt to beat the high scores for a few mystery games. Come and try the games yourself!

Storytelling

Back in the early days, Chinese street storytellers would entertain the community with fascinating tales for the duration of a lighted joss stick. With the rise of radio broadcasting, storytelling moved from the streets to the studio and storytellers like Lee Dai Sor became household names.

Come and relive the nostalgia of storytelling in Cantonese with Lee Swee Har, who was a student of the late Lee Dai Sor.

Silent Disco

  • 7.30pm - 11.00pm

Love to party? Put on specially designed headsets that provide an auditory experience just like a party dance floor, under the stars and twinkling Supertrees. With three DJs spinning different styles of music simultaneously, choose your preferred music channel and watch the customised LED headsets glow as you groove along!

Feast on special dishes inspired by  Peranakan culture and tradition.

If you thought Nasi Lemak couldn’t get any better, you’re in for a treat with Bakerzin’s Sambal Udang Nasi Lemak.

Saucy, red sambal prawns and a dollop of sambal chilli ignite the dish with savoury spice, while achar (blend of preserved mixed vegetables) brings out the beautiful green of your banana leaf plate. At the heart of this dish, is a perfect mound of piping warm and pillowy Butterfly Pea rice that gets its soft blue hue from the Butterfly Pea flower. Complete the meal with a sweet classic – Bandung (Rose Syrup Milk beverage).

This vibrant and flavourful dish is yours to enjoy from 9 July - 12 August 2018.

Peranakan Indulgence

Tuck into perfectly prepared Peranakan savouries with your loved ones at Indochine, for a lip-smacking meal. 

Pick from a tender seared Dutch Milk-fed veal loin chop (250gm) paired with Peranakan pongteh sauce and garden vegetable tempura ($48++), or succulent 48-hour Assam-marinated tiger prawns, grilled and served atop traditional Peranakan kapitan sauce ($18++ / $32++).
